patchouli plant

growing patchouli?
does anyone have any knowledge of patchouli plants? i’m having a hard time finding info on caring for them and their growth habit. i have one plant that i purchased at a larger nursery in my area(chicago) and it’s doing quite well outdoors in the ground. i haven’t been able to get back to the nursery to ask them about it and this is more fun than making a phone call. also, does anyone know how to dry them? thank you
She cannot live in the freeze maybe?
a results page for “how to grow patchouli”:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=how+to+growpatchouli&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7
usually it is good to ask for the government pages too when u research a plant but since this one is not mainstream there were only a couple hits when i searched “fact sheet” and the scientific name of the plant:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Pogostemon+cablin+fact+sheet&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7
another good one is to use the scientific name and cultivate or cultivation. or, if u are making babies use the word propagate or propagation and the name of your plant.
to get the scientific name use the common name and the word classification.
and last but not least…”how to steam distill essential oils”. i think u may have been looking awhile for that string of words. i had to try a few different ones:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=how+to+steam+distill+essential+oils&ei=utf-8&fr=b1ie7
you asked how to dry but i thought i’d throw that one in there because distilling is a fav for patchouli. otherwise, drying herbs is pretty easy. all u have to do is avoid mold. so that means no HOT and WET. it can be warm air only if the air is dry. if it is humid, they will need help. like cooling (like hang in front of the air conditioner or put in a paper bag in the fridge) or else if no cooling then accelerated drying (like in an oven with a pilot light or else at very low heat).
best is to use a long time to dry it<
some folks dry before distilling. some do it fresh.
like i said earlier, idk if they can take freeze. u will find out when u check the links. but if it turns out that she IS tender and can't winter over, then harvest her before the freeze comes. if she freezes i think it is likely her aromatic value will be ruined. i think u harvest leaves throughout the season..u will find that info too...but just for the end of the year is what i am saying..u gotta watch it. if u want to let her grow as long as possible, then when u suspect a freeze may occur, you can cover her. like with a sheet or bucket or whatever. the first freeze will be a light one so then u will have time to harvest her.
chicago freeze dates:
http://www.sws.uiuc.edu/atmos/statecli/Summary/Illinois.htm
on the very first link i gave u there will be some forums where u can chat about gardening and such.
also here is a general gardening forum:

and u were right, this was fun.

Aloha Bay Nature Scented Votives are made with an all-vegetable virgin wax blend that contains no residues of harmful solvents, otherwise known as Palm Wax. They burn hotter then most of the other candles on the markets because of the kind of wax Aloha Bay uses and the wicks that are braided cotton with paper cores. The surface of Palm Wax candles has a unique crystal pattern and bright colors. Ingredients: Steam-distilled palm wax.Directions: Always burn votives in a votive glass.Burn time: up to 16 hours. Basic Candle Burning Instructions:? Keep the wick trimmed to 1/4 inch, and do not place near drafts, fans, or air conditioning.? Keep jar free of wick trimmings and other debris. Flammable material in melted wax can act as a renegade wick? Burn for at least 45 minutes at a time. When burning our wax, it is important to allow the candle to burn long enough so that the wax pool reaches all the way across the top of the container. This allows for a larger pool of scent and maximizes the release or the "throw" of the fragrance into the air.? Keep out of the reach of children and pets.? Never leave a burning candle unattended.? Always burn on a fire resistant, flat surface. Do not place glass jar directly on lacquered furniture.? All our candles have wicks all the way through to the bottom.? Always store in a cool dry place. Do not freeze.? To avoid fading, do not place in direct sunlight.Warning: Keep out of reach of children and pets. Never leave burning candle unattended.
